With the ending of Kilauea’s 2018 eruption, I chartered a “reconnaissance” flight to survey the remnants within the now-cooled lava river and channels, reflecting on what endured. The discoveries uncovered in its aftermath proved profoundly intriguing. Contemplating the resilience that enabled certain elements to withstand the eruption’s intense forces, I found myself pondering —why did they endure, and how did they withstand the upheaval? Left Behind evolves into a contemplative journey, exploring the enigmatic remnants shaped by nature’s tumultuous dance. This work captures the silent stories etched into the landscape, revealing the enduring survival of Kilauea’s eruption.
